Railway Research Institute’s Membership in UIC International Railway Research Board (IRRB).
The appointment of Andrzej Massel, IK Director, as UIC IRRB Vice-Chair
The Railway Research Institute is an active member of the UIC international research platform, coordinating global railway cooperation in research and innovation. IRRB is the UIC  body whose task is to support railways and research entities in the area of rail transport research and innovation at a global level by, inter alia, supporting the research community in identifying research issues in order to make the best use of research and innovation potential.
The end of 2022 marked the end of another term of the IRRB leadership, in which the Director of the Railway Research Institute, Mr Andrzej Massel held the position of Vice-Chair.
On 08 December 2022 in Paris, Director Massel was re-elected as IRRB Vice-Chair (2023-2025 mandate) and his election was approved by the UIC General Assembly.

In 2019, the Railway Research Institute played a leading role in the IRRB's revision of the GVRD II - Global Vision for Railway Development document.

The objectives of the new GVRD version are the following:

  • to support railways in the development of future rail system optimisation processes in order to meet increasing customer expectations,
  • identification of best practices in order to highlight them as model solutions from within the railways and outside the railways for potential use,
  • supporting the railway community in order to transform rail into a more attractive for users means of transport, with the aim of making rail the "backbone" of the transport system.

In the previous and current terms of office, Director Andrzej Massel, as the IRRB Vice-Chair, oversees the work of the Working Group (WG1) which is responsible for updating the long-term strategy for rail transport.

The Railway Institute attaches great importance to work in the international area. We are pleased to be able to effectively support the work of the UIC in the area of research and innovation.
