Mr Andrzej Massel granted the Doctor of Science Degree


On 12 April 2022, according to the resolution of the Scientific Council of the Discipline of Civil Engineering and Transport of the Warsaw University of Technology, Mr Andrzej Massel, PhD, Eng., Director of the Railway Research Institute, was awarded the degree of Doctor of Science (Doctor Habilitatus) in the field of Engineering and Technical Sciences in the discipline of Civil Engineering and Transport.

The post-doctoral monograph "Methods and tools for assessing the use of transport infrastructure on the example of research of railway infrastructure of Central and Eastern European countries in 1989-2019" was published by the Publishing House of the Railway Research Institute in Warsaw in 2020, ISBN 978-83-943246-4-3 and contains 453 pages. It consists of eight chapters, preceded by a table of contents, a preface and a list of basic definitions and concepts. The monograph covers two main groups of objectives: methodological objectives, related to the development of new methods and tools for the research of railway infrastructure and its use, and empirical objectives aimed at expanding knowledge about the level of development of railway infrastructure in a geographically defined area.

Mr Andrzej Massel joined the Railway Research Institute in 1990, a year after graduating from the Faculty of Civil Engineering at Gdańsk University of Technology and after his apprenticeship at the PKP Operations Branch in Gdynia. In 1997, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences at the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Gdańsk University of Technology. He is a certified designer in the field of railway lines, stations and junctions.


In 2002 he became Head of the Railway Trade and Operations Department at the Railway Research Institute, and in 2005 - Deputy Director for Studies and Research Projects (with a break in 2010-2013 when he served as Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Infrastructure responsible for railways). Since October 2021 he held the position of Director of the Railway Research Institute and since 1 April 2022 he has been appointed the Director of the Institute. Member of the Transport Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2012-2015 and since 2020.


He is the author of numerous publications, including the author or co-author of 5 monographs, editor of 2 monographs, author of 24 chapters in monographs and 108 articles in scientific journals.
