IK awarded category "A"

The Railway institute has been evaluated by the Evaluation Committee for Research Units. The awarded category "A" testifies to the high scientific potential, many achievements and the grand effects of our research activities.


The potential of research units and universities under the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education has been evaluated for the first time according to new rules. The evaluation of scientific centres on Poland has been comprehensively analysed and the scientific output compared, the quality of conducted R&D activities has been assessed.

Prof. Maciej Zabel has been chosen to lead the Evaluation Committee for Research Units, which comprised of well known scholars with a vast scientific output.

The fact that the awarded category has a direct impact on the amount of funding of a research unit from the state budget is not without significance for the future of science in Poland.

In order to maintain objectivity in the award category of particular research units, the evaluation was carried out by specially approved algorithm. The comparison of units was held in the following four groups:

  • human and social sciences,
  • life sciences,
  • science and engineering,
  • art and artistic expressions.

The Committee evaluated the following criteria:

  • scientific and creative achievements,
  • scientific potential,
  • tangible results of scientific activities
  • the most relevant results of scientific activities indicated by the research unit.
