MODERN TRENDS OF FIRE PROTECTION

IN ROLLING STOCK

The 5th International Conference "Modern trends of fire protection in rolling stock" with the Exhibition "The modern and safe equipment of rolling stock" took place on May 10-11, 2022. The conference was held under the Honorary Patronage of the Minister of Infrastructure and the President of the Office of Rail Transport and the President of the Rail Industry Fire Association (RIFA). The first day of the Conference was organized at the Marriott Hotel in Warsaw at Jerozolimskie 65/79 Street, the second day at the Railway Research Institute, Chłopickiego 50 Street.

The media patronage over the Conference was provided by the following journals: Raport Kolejowy, Wolna Droga, Kurier Kolejowy as well as German Cargo-Manager Journal and Rail & Mobility.

The Conference participants included 125 delegates from Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Finland, Spain, Germany, Italy, Switzerland, the United Kingdom of Great Britain, the USA and Poland. The guests represented state administration, research units, universities, operators, rolling stock manufacturers, producers of non-metallic materials and vehicle components, producers of fire detection and extinguishing systems.

The Conference aroused great interest among European experts and specialists in the field of fire protection, as evidenced by 18 papers presented by speakers from various European countries and the USA, including five papers delivered by Polish speakers. The event was aimed at introducing new directions of fire protection in rail transport and presenting proposals for new solutions. It enabled the participants to get acquainted with the current requirements and the state of European legislation in the field of fire protection of rolling stock, directions of European research, including tests that were carried out at the Railway Research Institute. The threats posed by the use of lithium-ion batteries used in railway infrastructure were also presented. The speakers' reviewed papers will be published in a monograph.

On the second day, at the headquarters of the Railway Research Institute, took place a Discussion Panel, chaired by Tony Cash, Roger A. Dirksmeier, Michele Barbagli and Andrea Cremoncini, moderated by Jolanta Radziszewska-Wolińska, when the participants of the Conference had the opportunity to get answers to their questions. After the Discussion Panel the participants had a possibility to visit the Materials and Structure Laboratory of the Railway Research Institute, which enjoyed a great interest.
